Here is the stand I fabricated for the 90 gallon aquarium. I wanted a taller stand to give room for the equipment. Most of the commercial stands are 28' or less, which seems really short when you start trying to add items like your sump, protein skimmer and calcium reactor. I also wanted the entire front to open up to give plenty of access to the equipment underneath
I built the frame for the stand out of 2 x 2 x 1/8' steel angle. I measured the aquarium trim and added an 1/8' for clearance. The steel frame itself is 34' tall. I used steel for the frame for a couple of reasons, one big reason is that I am a welder by trade and I have it available to work with. Steel angle is also very strong allowing me to keep the entire front of the stand open, it is also very straight making it easy to build a plane, level frame for the aquarium to rest on.
I added a cut out on the top of the frame for the overflow plumbing
I drilled 3/16' DIA. holes in the steel frame on a staggered pattern for screw holes. I attached the wood using wood glue and # 6 wood screws. I used regular economy grade 1 x 4's for the trim.
I eased the edges of the wood with a router and a 3/8' round over bit. The side panels are made out of 1/4' birch plywood. I was able to use the drops from the plywood to build the doors. I used 1 x 3 for the door frame and stapled the ply wood to the back side.
Here it is almost complete, with one coat of satin stain. A job that would make any self respecting carpenter throw up.... but I like the results and it is built to fit my needs.
